The University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab has garnered the support of the Oracle Health Sciences Institute for its research that is helping medical professionals analyze millions of patient records by developing a powerful data visualization tool called EventFlow. EventFlow is allowing medical professionals to uncover the relationships between treatment protocols and adverse events. This technology is based upon temporal event sequences so it can be applied to many fields beyond medicine. Many other fields have begun to implement this tool. "Part of the thrill of discovering through information visualization is to be able to see patterns that you did not expect to see. Visualization is not about pictures, it is about insight" says Ben Shneiderman, a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland.
