Abstracts due July 28
The area of wide bandgap semiconductors has been rapidly expanding. In January 2014, US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz declared that wide bandgap semiconductors are essential to our technology future. DOE has issued several large solicitations trying to push the development of this technology. This workshop gives a unique opportunity, not yet touched on by other groups, to specifically address the role that defects play in the operation, yield, and reliability of these power electronic devices.
The main objective of this one-day workshop, held at the University of Maryland on September 23, is to bring together the nation's leading experts in the WBG supply chain to identify fundamental research needs in WBG materials for advancing power electronics switching applications.
In the broader picture, the workshop will foster new frontiers in material synthesis, material characterization, multi-scale modeling, and defect physics in the excited state of the condensed matter.
The deliberations emanating from the workshop will be summarized in a workshop report that identifies the fundamental research needs in material synthesis and characterization techniques, and modeling and testing methodologies required to assess the role of material defects on long-term field-reliability.
